Should I Choose an RX 9070 XT or RX 7900 XTX to Replace My RTX 2080 Ti?

I'm planning to replace my aging RTX 2080 Ti and am shopping on the used market. I may be able to buy an RX 9070 XT near MSRP, and I've also found several RX 7900 XTX cards locally. I play at 1440p and have no plans to move to a higher resolution. I'm also comfortable using upscaling if it provides a good image while improving performance. The 7900 XTX's 24GB of VRAM is appealing for long-term use, although 16GB seems to be the current norm for this performance tier. My main goal is to get as close as possible to my monitor's 165Hz refresh rate at high or ultra settings today. I also tend to keep hardware for a very long time, so I'd like the card to remain capable of around 60 FPS at high or medium-high settings roughly 8โ€“10 years from now, similar to how my 2080 Ti has held up. My system uses a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, 32GB of DDR4 memory, an 850W power supply, and a 1440p 165Hz display. Between the RX 9070 XT and RX 7900 XTX, which would be the better long-term upgrade?

The important distinction is that neither card will be running new games at 165 FPS on high or ultra settings eight to ten years from now. Your longer-term 60 FPS target is more realistic, especially if youโ€™re willing to use upscaling and adjust settings. Since youโ€™re buying for gaming today, the 9070 XTโ€™s newer feature set probably matters more than the 7900 XTXโ€™s extra VRAM.

MellowCedar42: Thatโ€™s fairโ€”Iโ€™m not expecting 165 FPS that far into the future. Iโ€™m mainly hoping for roughly 60 FPS at high or medium-high settings, similar to what my 2080 Ti can still manage today.

If the 7900 XTX is only slightly cheaper, Iโ€™d choose the 9070 XT. The 7900 XTX still has excellent raw raster performance and 24GB of memory, but the newer card should offer better longevity through newer technologies and driver support. Iโ€™d only pick the XTX if the price difference is large enough to make the additional VRAM and raw performance worthwhile.

For gaming, Iโ€™d lean toward the RX 9070 XT. Itโ€™s the newer architecture, has better support for current and upcoming features, and should be the more sensible choice for a fresh purchase. Its 16GB of VRAM is likely enough for 1440p gaming for quite a while. The 7900 XTX is mainly more attractive if you also do serious content creation or can get it substantially cheaper.
