Should I Choose College, Trade School, or Self-Learning for a Career in Tech and Game Development?

I'm 17 and finishing high school with no real technology experience yet, but programming and gaming development seem genuinely interesting to me. I'm considering IT or computer science through a bootcamp, trade school, or another nontraditional route. I'd prefer to avoid a traditional college degree because I'm tired of academic subjects and writing, although I'm open to reconsidering if it's the most practical path. How realistic is it to build a stable career in IT or game development without college? Are bootcamps or trade schools worth the cost, and are there particular programs or alternatives I should consider?

Be careful with bootcamps. The days when someone could complete a short program and immediately land a high-paying programming job are mostly gone. Entry-level technology roles are very competitive, and experienced workers who were laid off are often applying for junior positions too. A degree isn’t the only route, but replacing it usually means putting in a lot of consistent work, learning independently, and building projects that prove what you can do.

A free computer science curriculum can give you a realistic preview of college-level material without committing money. Look for courses covering programming fundamentals, data structures, algorithms, math, and eventually game development. Start with the introductory lessons rather than jumping straight into advanced topics. If your school offers an introductory programming or AP computer science class, that could also be a useful test of your interest.

Before spending money, try free beginner material and see whether you actually enjoy coding. Khan Academy, structured online courses, and introductory programming classes can help you get started. For game development, experiment with C# and Unity or with Unreal Engine, then make a few small games rather than beginning with a huge project. That experience will make it easier to decide whether college, certification, or self-study fits you.
