I'm building my first PC with my brother and am still learning the basics. The main use will be gaming, especially heavily modded Minecraft and shader packs, and I'll be pairing the system with an RTX 3080 10GB. I already have 32GB of DDR4 memory, and upgrading to DDR5 isn't realistic for my budget. I'm deciding between the Intel Core i7-14700 and Ryzen 7 5800X3D. The Intel chip is slightly cheaper where I live, but I've heard that the 5800X3D can be better for gaming because of its 3D V-Cache, while the 14700 may be stronger for general performance. Since this is a completely new build and I can't reuse my current motherboard, which processor would offer the better overall value and gaming experience?

You may want to look at the Core i5-14600K or 14600KF as well. It can match or beat the 5800X3D in many gaming tests, has plenty of performance for modded Minecraft, and should cost less. The money saved could go toward a better cooler or motherboard. Just make sure the motherboard supports DDR4, since you already have that memory.
Power and cooling are worth considering. The 14700 can draw more power under heavy loads and produce more heat, so it needs a capable cooler and motherboard. The 5800X3D is generally simpler for a gaming-only build, but neither option is automatically the winner here. Since the Intel chip is cheaper for you and you’re starting from scratch, the 14700—or even the 14600K if priced well—may offer the best overall value.
The 14700 is probably the better all-rounder. Gaming performance is in the same general range as the 5800X3D, especially with decent DDR4, but it has considerably more cores and is much faster for rendering, compiling, multitasking, and other productivity work. Since you’re building a new system rather than upgrading an existing AM4 motherboard, the 5800X3D doesn’t get the usual drop-in upgrade advantage. Compare the total cost of the CPU, motherboard, and cooler before deciding.
For gaming-focused use, the 5800X3D is a very strong choice. Its extra cache can improve frame-time consistency and 1% lows in CPU-heavy games, and Minecraft can benefit from that. That said, both processors are more than powerful enough for Minecraft with an RTX 3080, so you probably won’t notice a huge difference in most situations.

If gaming is literally the only thing you care about, the 5800X3D still makes sense. If you’ll be doing anything beyond gaming, the extra performance from the 14700 is more useful than a small gaming lead.
