I'm planning a gaming build with an RX 9070 XT and am deciding between the Ryzen 5 7500X3D and Ryzen 7 9700X, which cost about the same where I live. The Ryzen 5 9600X is also an option for roughly $75 less. My main focus is 1440p and 4K gaming, mostly AAA games and some strategy titles. I use my PC for work too, but nothing particularly CPU-intensive, so productivity performance is not a major concern. Which processor would make the most sense?

At 1440p and especially 4K, the RX 9070 XT will often be the limiting factor, so the difference between these processors may be small in most AAA games. The 7500X3D can lead in cache-sensitive or CPU-heavy titles, while the 9700X may offer better 1% lows in some games that use multiple cores.
The 9600X is worth considering at $75 less. It should pair well with the 9070 XT for 1440p and 4K AAA gaming and is unlikely to bottleneck the GPU in normal situations. It is still a step down from the other two in overall CPU performance, though, so the cheaper option makes the most sense if you want to save money rather than maximize gaming performance.
For a gaming-focused build, the 7500X3D is the safest pick. Its extra cache can help in games that are sensitive to memory latency, and it should run cool and quietly. Since your work is light, the 9700X’s extra cores probably won’t benefit you much.
Productivity is definitely secondary for me. If my old i5-8400 handles my work, I’m not too worried about either of these CPUs managing it.
I don’t really play competitive games, mostly AAA titles and some strategy games. I’m wondering whether games such as Paradox titles can effectively use all eight cores of the 9700X.
