I'm building a new PC and deciding between the Ryzen 9 7900X on AM5 and the Core Ultra 7 270K on LGA 1851. The Intel option costs roughly $40–$60 more. I mainly game at 1440p on ultra settings with an RTX 3080 Ti, but around 2027 I may start doing more Blender work and programming. Since I haven't bought either motherboard platform yet, which CPU would be the better choice for gaming, productivity, and long-term value?

For a mixed gaming and work build, I’d base the decision on how long you plan to keep the motherboard. Choose the 270K if you want better performance right now and expect to keep the system for five years or more. Choose the 7900X if you specifically want to upgrade the processor later without rebuilding the entire PC. Also consider waiting if your purchase isn’t urgent, since newer CPU generations could change the value of both options.
The Core Ultra 7 270K is the faster option in most current games and productivity applications, including workloads like Blender. If you’re focused on getting the strongest performance immediately and don’t expect to replace the CPU without changing the motherboard, the extra $40–$60 is reasonable.
AM5 is the more appealing choice if you want an upgrade path. You could start with the 7900X and later replace it with a newer Ryzen chip while keeping the motherboard and memory. That matters if you might upgrade in one to three years, although the 7900X itself isn’t the best gaming-focused Ryzen option compared with an X3D model.

The upgrade path is a strong advantage, but it’s still worth remembering that future CPU support shouldn’t be treated as guaranteed until the manufacturer officially confirms it. If you normally replace the whole platform every few years, this advantage may not matter much.
