Should I clone my photo drive or copy the files to a second drive?

I want to create an offline backup of an external 4TB hard drive that stores all my photos. I bought a second drive with enough capacity, but I'm unsure whether cloning the original drive or copying the files individually is safer. Cloning makes an exact duplicate, including the file system, while a file-based backup seems less likely to carry over file system problems and may be easier to update later. Which approach would you recommend for protecting the photos?

Cloning creates a precise copy of the entire disk, which is mainly useful when you need to reproduce a system drive or recover a complete working setup. For personal files, copying the files is usually simpler and uses the backup drive more efficiently. Any damaged or unreadable files may fail to copy either way, so check the source drive first and review any errors.

For stronger protection, keep more than one backup. A small NAS or another external drive can receive regular backups, and the backup should ideally retain previous versions. Don’t leave every backup constantly accessible from the computer, since malware such as ransomware could otherwise encrypt them too.

For a data-only drive, I’d use a file-based backup rather than a full clone. You can copy the photos directly or use backup software that detects changes and updates only new or modified files, making future backups much faster. It’s also a good idea to verify that the copied files can actually be opened.

A backup utility that supports Windows 7 and incremental updates would be useful here, especially if it can verify files after copying.

I’d automate the file copy instead of dragging everything manually. A scheduled backup can keep the second drive synchronized while preserving older versions, so an accidental deletion or overwrite doesn’t immediately destroy the only backup.
