I'm super excited but also kind of overwhelmed as I start learning programming. I'm currently on the hunt for a laptop, but I'm stuck between getting a MacBook or a Windows machine. I've heard pros for both options—I've read that MacBooks are great for Unix tasks and development tools, while Windows laptops tend to be cheaper and more versatile. My budget is around $1000 to $1400 (about 14,000 yen), and I need a laptop that will last me through college. I'm focusing on learning Python, working on LeetCode-style algorithms, and building projects. What would you recommend? Any specific models or useful tips would really help me out. Thanks in advance!

I’d say go for a Windows laptop! If you want the Unix experience later on, you can always set up WSL or dual boot a Linux distro. Plus, you’ll have plenty of options within your budget that will serve you well during college.
In my experience, Windows is more versatile for coding. You can do almost anything you want with a Windows laptop. On the flip side, Macs get a lot of praise for their efficiency and design, but they can be more expensive. If you’re on a budget, I’d definitely recommend going with Windows. And for programming, aim for at least 16GB of RAM to future-proof your laptop!
As much as I'm not a huge fan of Apple, a MacBook would probably be your best choice for a long-term investment in programming. Just keep in mind the price point.
If you're leaning towards a Mac, consider using Parallels for running Windows apps. It's a solid option, especially if you prefer the Mac ecosystem while still needing Windows tools.
A good ThinkPad could be your best bet! They are reliable, well-built, and great for coding.

Honestly, any laptop in the $1k range will be good for programming. With Windows, you can access Unix-like features through WSL or by installing Linux, so don't stress about dev stuff.
