Should I Hand-Code My First Web App or Use AI to Prototype It Quickly?

I have an idea for a web app, but I don't have much coding experience and haven't built one before. I'm trying to decide whether I should learn the fundamentals and write the app myself, or use AI coding tools to create an initial prototype and test the idea faster. What approach makes the most sense?

It depends on your goal. If you mainly want to validate the idea, use AI tools to build a small prototype as quickly as possible. If you want to become a developer, hand-code the important parts and use an AI assistant when you get stuck. You can combine both approaches instead of treating them as mutually exclusive.

For a proof of concept, thereโ€™s usually little benefit in writing everything from scratch. Use the fastest tools available, get something working, and see whether anyone actually wants it. Once the concept has potential, you can replace messy generated code with a cleaner implementation. Hand-coding from the start is worthwhile mainly if learning the craft is one of your goals.

QuietMaple5: That seems like the practical distinction: prototype for speed, but study and rewrite the parts that matter before trying to turn it into a real product.
