Should I keep my B840 motherboard for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D upgrade or switch to B850?

I'm upgrading from a Ryzen 5 7600X to a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. My current system has an MSI B840 Gaming Plus WiFi, 32GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 CL36 in a 2x16GB kit, an RTX 5070 Ti, two M.2 drives, a 360mm MSI AIO, and an 850W Corsair RM850x Shift power supply.

The only issue I've had is memory stability. EXPO at 6000 MT/s causes crashes, while disabling EXPO and manually running the RAM at 5600 MT/s has been completely stable. I've heard that B840 is an entry-level chipset and wondered whether a B850 board would improve things, but I don't plan to overclock, need additional M.2 slots, or particularly care about PCIe 5.0.

Would it make sense to keep the B840 and see how the 9800X3D performs, or should I replace the motherboard with a B850 model?

Running the RAM at 5600 MT/s is unlikely to make a meaningful difference with an X3D processor. The extra cache reduces how much gaming performance depends on memory speed, so stable 5600 is probably a better choice than chasing 6000 and dealing with crashes.

I’d keep the B840. The chipset itself shouldn’t determine memory stability, and a decent 7-phase VRM with a proper heatsink should be enough for a 9800X3D, even under heavy loads. The issue is more likely the memory kit, the CPU’s memory controller, BIOS settings, or slot placement than the motherboard chipset.

The 9800X3D does use more power than some earlier X3D chips, so stronger power delivery is nice, but that doesn’t automatically justify replacing the board. I’d only move to another motherboard if you need more connectivity, better BIOS features, or confirmed evidence that this board is defective.

The memory has already passed MemTest86, and the sticks are installed in the recommended A2 and B2 slots. I’m mainly wondering whether the 9800X3D’s memory controller will handle the kit better than my current CPU.
