Should I Keep My DDR5-6400 RAM or Swap It for a 6000 CL38 Kit?

I recently bought a new PC with a Ryzen 7 7700, an Asus B650M AYW WiFi motherboard, 32GB of TeamGroup T-Force Delta DDR5-6400 CL32 memory in a 2x16GB kit, a 1TB NVMe SSD, and a PowerColor Hellhound RX 9060 XT 16GB graphics card.

After purchasing the system, I read that Ryzen 7000 processors often perform best with DDR5-6000 because higher memory speeds can cause the memory controller to run in a less efficient mode. I may still be able to ask the supplier to exchange the DDR5-6400 CL32 kit for DDR5-6000 CL38 instead.

Would swapping be the better choice, or should I keep the faster CL32 kit and configure it to run at 6000? If I keep it, is this something I set in the BIOS using EXPO and manual memory settings?

The main concern is that running above 6000 MT/s on Ryzen 7000 can cause the memory controller and memory clock to operate asynchronously, with UCLK running at half the memory clock. That can reduce latency and remove much of the benefit of the higher memory speed. A sensible setup is to enable EXPO, set the memory speed to 6000 MT/s, and check that UCLK is set to match MCLK, often shown as UCLK=MCLK. If 6400 runs reliably with a 1:1 ratio, you can keep it there, but 6000 1:1 is generally the safer and more efficient target.

That was the half-speed behavior I was worried about. Knowing I can set EXPO, choose 6000 MT/s, and check the UCLK/MCLK setting makes the original kit seem much less risky.

The 6400 CL32 kit is probably based on higher-quality Hynix memory, which gives you more room for tuning. A 6000 CL38 kit may be simpler to run at its advertised settings, but its looser timings make it less attractive if the price is similar. Keeping the 6400 kit and running it at 6000 could potentially allow tighter timings later.

You can keep the DDR5-6400 kit and manually run it at 6000 MT/s. That is usually done in the BIOS after enabling EXPO, so you do not necessarily need to exchange the memory.

Thanks for clarifying. I have not built a PC since around 2016, so I was not sure whether this was a BIOS setting.

It is worth trying the kit at its rated 6400 speed first. Depending on the BIOS version and the memory controller in the CPU, it may work without problems. If it is unstable, dropping it to 6000 is an easy fallback.
