Should I Keep My High-End PC or Downgrade for 1440p Gaming?

I currently have a 5080 Founders Edition and a 9850X3D in a compact K101 case, which I'm moving into a Terra soon. I recently tried switching to a QD-OLED monitor, but it caused severe eye strain and nausea within about 15 minutes, so I returned it. Instead of pursuing a 4K OLED ultrawide later this year, I'm now considering a 1440p IPS monitor with G-Sync Pulsar.

Because Pulsar can make 1440p gaming feel very smooth without needing extremely high frame rates, I'm wondering whether this system is excessive for my needs. One option is to buy a 5070 now, confirm that it works, and keep it boxed until I can sell the 5080 at a favorable price. Another is to keep the current system and downgrade later if GPU and memory prices remain high.

I'm also questioning whether a 9850X3D makes sense for this use case, or whether I should move all the way down to a 5800X3D, RTX 5070, and 64 GB of DDR4, possibly buying used. Is downgrading a sensible way to save money, or would I be better off keeping the high-end parts for longevity?

I wouldn’t build a new AM4 system just to save money. A 5800X3D is still capable, but it’s an older platform with less upgrade potential, and you’d be giving up a lot of longevity for what might only be a few hundred dollars. If you downgrade the graphics card, keeping the newer platform would make more sense.

If you don’t need the money, I’d keep the current system. The 5080 and 9850X3D may be overkill for 1440p, but they give you plenty of longevity and headroom for demanding or poorly optimized games. Downgrading only makes sense if you actually need the cash or no longer care about high-end performance.

That’s where I’m stuck. I’m not trying to solve a financial problem; I’m wondering whether I’m keeping far more performance than I’ll realistically use now that 4K OLED may not work for me.

Before ruling out OLED completely, you could look into WOLED. Some people experience much less eye strain with WOLED than with QD-OLED. That said, if symptoms appeared almost immediately, avoiding another expensive gamble and going with IPS is completely reasonable. There’s no benefit to OLED image quality if you can’t comfortably use the display.

I considered WOLED, but the reaction to QD-OLED was so intense and happened so quickly that I’m hesitant to gamble on another OLED panel.

Buying a replacement GPU now and storing it while trying to time the 5080’s resale value sounds like a lot of effort and risk. Prices could rise, fall, or stabilize in ways you can’t predict, and you could end up holding a card that loses value. Do the full buy-and-sell math first; otherwise, keeping the system is probably the simpler and safer choice.

That was my initial reaction too. The idea only came up after realizing that G-Sync Pulsar might make 1440p feel smooth enough that I wouldn’t need this much GPU power.
