Should I Pursue a Career in IT or Software Engineering?

Hi everyone! I'm a computer science graduate who's been on the hunt for a software engineering job for over a year now, but I keep getting automatic rejections from companies. Currently, I'm working as a Help Desk technician to cover my bills, but I'm feeling pretty stuck and frustrated in my situation. I've been learning backend development on my own, but I've also dipped into IT topics like networking and PowerShell, which I find quite interesting. My main question is: which career path is more secure from AI advancements, and what opportunities exist for growth in both software engineering and IT? I really appreciate any guidance you can offer!

If you’re already in an IT role at Help Desk, that could actually work in your favor! It might be a good idea to focus on climbing the IT ladder by getting some certifications. They can really help you advance. Do you know which certifications to pursue?

Have you considered your location and your citizenship status? Those factors can really affect job prospects. Also, what’s your university's reputation and your GPA? Have you had any technical interviews yet? That can give you insight into where you might stand in the job market.

As an app developer myself, I think it’s a solid idea to stick with your current job for now. But you should definitely keep an eye on how AI is evolving in both IT and software development because, honestly, neither field feels completely safe from it.
