Should I replace my 32GB DDR5 stick with a 2x16GB kit?

I'm currently using a single 32GB DDR5 module with a Core i7-14700K and an RTX 4070 Ti Super. I notice performance drops when the system is under heavier load and I'm wondering whether switching to two 16GB modules would help. Would the benefits of dual-channel memory make a noticeable difference, or should I investigate other possible causes first?

I’d switch to a matched 2x16GB kit if you have the option, but first confirm what your current memory is doing. Check Task Manager or HWiNFO while the slowdown happens to see whether RAM usage is maxing out. Also compare the kit’s speed and latency, since timings such as CL can affect performance.

Two matched 16GB modules are generally the better setup because they can run in dual-channel mode. A single 32GB stick may be operating in single-channel mode, which can reduce performance in some games and workloads. That said, changing the RAM may not automatically fix the drops unless single-channel memory is actually the cause.

Dual-channel memory is usually preferable, but the symptoms could also come from temperatures, CPU or GPU utilization, power limits, background programs, or a game-specific issue. Monitor RAM usage, temperatures, clock speeds, and utilization during the performance drops before assuming the memory configuration is responsible.
