I've been using the same gaming PC for years and my GTX 1080 Ti is still surprisingly capable at 1080p/144Hz. The system has an Intel i7-8700K, 16GB of DDR4 memory, and a second monitor. I mostly play a mix of newer and older single-player games, plus some casual multiplayer.
Recently, I've started seeing random crashes and critical errors. Everything I want to play still runs, but I'm wondering whether the hardware is finally reaching the end of its useful life. Should I troubleshoot the existing system, wait for upcoming hardware, or build a completely new PC now?
I'm also unsure which parts are still worth carrying over, whether a midrange or high-end system makes sense for another decade of use, and whether upgrading to an OLED monitor would be worthwhile. I'm shopping in Poland and don't have a fixed budget yet, but I'm considering a mid-to-high-end build. I'm not attached to either Intel or AMD.

A full rebuild made sense for me once my older PC developed multiple warning signs, such as failing fans, storage problems, and poor performance in demanding applications. If your 1080 Ti is still stable and your only issue is crashing, diagnosing it first is better than replacing everything. If the motherboard, power supply, storage, and GPU are all aging together, though, a clean-slate build is easier than trying to upgrade one part at a time.
If the games still perform well, there’s no urgent reason to replace the whole machine. Try a fresh OS installation and check the SSD, RAM, PSU, and GPU temperatures before spending money. Sixteen gigabytes of RAM is usable, though moving to 32GB would make a modern system feel more comfortable.
For a new build, AMD’s current platform is attractive because the motherboard should support several future CPU upgrades. A sensible setup would use a midrange Ryzen processor, 32GB of DDR5, a reliable modern power supply, and a graphics card selected for your target resolution. Spend more on the GPU if you want higher settings or a future OLED display, but don’t assume the most expensive parts will guarantee ten years of top-tier performance.
The system isn’t automatically obsolete just because it’s old. Start by finding out what is causing the crashes: check Event Viewer, run memory and storage tests, monitor temperatures, and inspect the power supply. A clean operating-system installation can also help. Replacing old thermal paste and cleaning dust from the CPU and GPU are inexpensive things to try first.

That makes sense. I’m not very comfortable with overclocking, so I’d rather troubleshoot at stock settings before changing anything.
