Should I Stick With 1440p or Try 4K With an RTX 3080 Ti?

My current setup is a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, RTX 3080 Ti with 12GB of VRAM, and 32GB of DDR4 memory. I play on a 65-inch LG CX in the living room, streaming from my PC through Moonlight to an Xbox Series S because I can't run an HDMI cable between them. Both devices use gigabit Ethernet, but I can't use G-Sync or VRR on the TV this way. I've been considering 1440p at 120 FPS for competitive or fast-moving games, and 4K at 60 FPS for slower, cinematic games. However, even Alan Wake Remastered seems to stutter occasionally at 4K with DLSS set to Quality. Is 4K simply pushing the RTX 3080 Ti too hard, or could the stuttering be caused by streaming or another part of the setup?

The GPU may not be the only source of the hitching. Since youโ€™re streaming to the TV through an Xbox, check the Moonlight resolution, bitrate, frame pacing, and decode settings as well as the gameโ€™s performance. A game can feel stuttery even when the PC is rendering smoothly if the stream has uneven frame delivery. Also try lowering demanding settings such as ray tracing, shadows, and textures before assuming the card cannot handle 4K.

MellowPine47: I expected newer games to struggle at 4K, but I was surprised by the behavior in Alan Wake Remastered. Iโ€™ll check the streaming settings and frame pacing as well as the GPU settings.

A 4K TV can make 1440p look quite good from a normal viewing distance, and its own motion processing or scaling may make the image seem smoother than the raw resolution suggests. Given the lack of VRR, a consistent 120 FPS at 1440pโ€”or a locked 60 FPS at 1440pโ€”may feel better than an unstable 4K presentation.

For this hardware, 1440p is the safer choice, especially in newer games. A 3080 Ti can still run plenty of titles at 4K, but 12GB of VRAM can become a limitation as texture and rendering demands increase. Iโ€™d use 1440p at a high frame rate for fast games and reserve 4K 60 for titles that are easier to run or where youโ€™re comfortable lowering settings.
