My current PC has a Core i9-14900KF, Radeon RX 6700 XT, ASRock Z790 motherboard, 48GB of DDR5-7200 memory, a 1TB SK hynix Platinum P41 SSD, an 850W Gold power supply, and a 360mm Thermalright AIO. I mainly play CPU-heavy games such as Valorant, Counter-Strike 2, and Fortnite. I have been considering replacing the CPU and motherboard with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and an ASUS X870 board, while keeping the same memory, SSD, power supply, and graphics card for now. I have also been dealing with BIOS-related problems, which is partly why I started considering a platform change. Would moving to the 9800X3D provide a noticeable gaming improvement, or would my money be better spent elsewhere?

If you do switch to AM5, the X870 board is probably unnecessary unless you specifically need USB4, extra connectivity, or certain expansion features. A good B850 board should offer essentially the same gaming performance. Also, DDR5-7200 may not run optimally on Ryzen; DDR5-6000 with tight timings is generally easier to configure, while 6400 can work depending on the memory controller and BIOS settings. There is also no need to replace your Thermalright AIO just because you change platforms, so avoid spending money on parts that will not improve performance.
The 14900KF is still an extremely fast gaming processor, so replacing it with a 9800X3D is not automatically a worthwhile upgrade. The X3D chip can be significantly faster in some CPU-limited games, but in others the difference may be tiny or nonexistent. Check your actual GPU usage, frame rates, and frametime behavior in the games you play before deciding. If the system is stable after the BIOS issue is fixed, keeping the current CPU is probably the better value.
I would prioritize the graphics card rather than replacing the CPU and motherboard. Your 14900KF can handle much faster GPUs, while the RX 6700 XT is more likely to be the limiting component in many modern games. For Valorant and CS2, your current GPU should already be capable of high frame rates, so a GPU upgrade may not feel dramatic unless you play at a high resolution or use demanding settings. Test GPU utilization and your in-game frame rates first, then choose a card based on your resolution and budget.
I play Valorant most often, plus CS2 and Fortnite, and I have not complained about my FPS. If the BIOS gets fixed, I may upgrade the GPU, but I am unsure which models offer good value without spending flagship-level money.
I am not really losing FPS right now. The BIOS problems are what made me think about changing platforms, but my friend is checking the system and thinks the issue should be fixable.
