I've been thinking about moving from Windows to Linux because I like the idea of having much more control over how my desktop looks and works. Before making the switch, I want to know how it would affect Steam and other games, especially with an Nvidia GPU. Do most games run reliably, or do they require troubleshooting? Is Linux difficult to install and learn, and what benefits does it offer beyond customization?

Game compatibility is mixed rather than guaranteed. Some titles work immediately, some have missing cutscenes, audio, or controller support, and others require configuration. Anti-cheat is one of the biggest obstacles, so check every important game before switching completely. Testing Linux from a live USB or in a dual-boot setup lets you check your hardware and games without giving up Windows.
Linux can feel lighter and faster than Windows, with less bundled software and fewer background processes. Some systems boot and respond noticeably faster, and you have much more freedom to customize or remove things. Beginner-friendly distributions such as Linux Mint make installation fairly straightforward, but it helps to approach Linux as a new operating system and expect to learn some basic troubleshooting.
A dual-boot setup is probably the safest way to try Linux. You can keep Windows for school or games that need it while gradually moving your everyday work to Linux. The transition can take a few months, but you can learn at your own pace. Most games work through Steam Proton, although games using certain anti-cheat systems may not work properly.

Out of a library of roughly 300 games, one user found only three that did not work, though results vary. I’m okay with losing access to a few games as long as the ones I care about, especially Persona, work well.
The lighter, less cluttered system is definitely appealing. I’ll do more research before choosing a distribution.
