I've installed Linux and Windows several times and keep going back and forth. I'm currently using Fedora KDE on an all-AMD system, and the installation and setup were smooth. My applications are installed, Steam is configured, and my drives are mounted and accessible.
I'm primarily a gamer, but I'm also uncomfortable with Windows telemetry, advertising, marketing, forced updates, and the general lack of user control. I'm willing to accept that some games with aggressive anti-cheat systems may not work on Linux, but I'm trying to understand how practical a full-time move would be.
My main concerns are:
1. How close is Linux gaming to true click-and-play? I've seen many games rated Gold or Platinum that still appear to need launch options or other tweaks, sometimes with visual or audio problems. Is that typical, especially for people with large Steam libraries?
2. Many gaming comparisons show Linux performing as well as or better than Windows. How representative are those results in everyday use?
3. Some Linux applications feel less polished or feature-complete than their Windows equivalents. Is that mainly dependent on which applications I choose?
4. KDE's default application menu looks dated to me despite the rest of the desktop being polished. Are there better menu options or layouts?
I like Linux's privacy, customization, and control, but Windows is undeniably convenient. I'd appreciate practical experiences from people who have made a similar decision.

The KDE menu is easy to replace or customize. You can try a different menu widget, switch to the application dashboard, install a theme, or use another desktop layout. One of Linux’s strengths is that you don’t have to accept the default interface. If Fedora KDE works well otherwise, an unattractive menu alone shouldn’t be a reason to abandon it.
Gaming performance depends heavily on the particular game, API, GPU, and driver. Linux can do very well with older games, older AMD hardware, Vulkan, and some DirectX titles, but modern DirectX 12 releases often still favor Windows. Video comparisons are usually selective, so they may showcase games that work especially well on Linux. A large library can work surprisingly well, but it’s worth checking the games you actually play rather than relying on an overall average.
The software experience varies a lot. Some projects are excellent and effectively match their Windows versions, while others are maintained by one person or have fewer features and less polish. It’s best to evaluate the specific applications you depend on instead of judging the entire platform. Keeping Windows in a dual-boot setup is also a perfectly reasonable option if a few essential programs or games still require it.
For most Steam games, Linux is much closer to click-and-play than compatibility reports make it seem. Proton has improved a lot, while many old reports still mention tweaks that are no longer necessary. Use compatibility databases mainly to check whether a game works at all, rather than assuming every listed launch option is still required. The biggest exceptions are games with unsupported anti-cheat, unusual launchers, or multiplayer restrictions. Occasionally a simple launch option such as gamescope can solve issues like mouse capture on multi-monitor setups.

That makes sense. I’m less concerned about winning benchmark charts and more interested in whether my own regular games are reliable.
