Should I switch my Windows 11 laptop out of S mode to install LibreOffice?

I have a Lenovo laptop running Windows 11 Home in S mode, with 16 GB of RAM, an AMD Ryzen 5 processor, 238 GB of storage, and a 64-bit operating system. When I try to install LibreOffice, Windows tells me I need to leave S mode. Is it safe to switch to regular Windows 11 Home, and are there any disadvantages to installing LibreOffice and other apps outside S mode? I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has made the switch.

There isnโt a performance benefit you need to worry about when leaving S mode. Youโll simply gain the ability to install normal Windows applications, while losing the extra restriction that only Store apps can be used. For a home computer, regular Windows 11 Home is usually more practical. With only 238 GB of storage, keep an eye on free space and use an external drive for large personal files if necessary.

LibreOffice may be available through the Microsoft Store, so you could try that version first. If you want broader software compatibility, though, leaving S mode is fine. Just download programs from their official websites or other reputable sources, keep Windows updated, and pay attention during installation.

Youโre thinking of S mode, not Safe Mode. S mode restricts you to apps from the Microsoft Store and is mainly intended for simpler, more locked-down computers. Switching to regular Windows 11 Home is reasonable for a personal laptop if you need software that isnโt available through the Store. The change is generally free, but itโs effectively one-way, so make sure youโre comfortable before switching.
