I currently use Windows and am considering switching to Linux. My main concern is gaming: I regularly play EA Sports FC 26, Minecraft, Fortnite, and Assetto Corsa. I also have an external 256GB SSD that I could use for testing or installing another operating system. Would Linux work well for these games, and which beginner-friendly distribution would you recommend?

Since Fortnite is important to you, dual-booting is probably the safest choice. Keep Windows for Fortnite and possibly online FC 26, then install Linux for everything else. You can use the external SSD to try Linux first without changing your main Windows installation, though an internal drive generally gives better performance.
The exact distribution matters less than having current graphics drivers and using a supported launcher. Minecraft Java works through launchers such as Prism, while Minecraft Bedrock support is more limited. Check each game on ProtonDB before switching, and consider testing Linux from the external SSD before committing.
Minecraft and Assetto Corsa work well on Linux, and most mainstream distributions can handle them. FC 26 may run in offline or local modes, but online play is not currently supported. Fortnite is the major exception because its anti-cheat system does not support Linux, so you would need Windows for it.
For a first Linux gaming setup, Bazzite is a good option because it is designed around gaming and works well with Steam. Linux Mint or Zorin OS may feel more familiar if you want a traditional desktop. Fedora KDE is another solid choice if you prefer something modern and Windows-like.
