Should I upgrade from dual 24-inch 1080p monitors to 27-inch 1440p?

My two 24-inch 1080p monitors are starting to fail, so I need replacements. I'm considering moving to a pair of 27-inch 1440p displays, but I'm unsure whether my current PC can handle the higher resolution without an upgrade. The system has a Ryzen 5 7600, Radeon RX 6700 XT, and 32GB of DDR5 memory. I realize I may need to reduce graphics settings in newer or more demanding games. Would 1440p be a sensible upgrade for this hardware, or should I stick with 1080p until I replace the PC?

1440p is a worthwhile upgrade, especially at 27 inches. You can always lower the resolution or use upscaling in particularly demanding games, so you’re not locked into rendering everything at native 1440p. Chasing maximum settings isn’t necessary; consistent performance and image quality matter more.

Yes, the RX 6700 XT was designed with 1440p gaming in mind. It should handle most games well at medium-to-high settings, though newer demanding titles may require some adjustments. You don’t need to use ray tracing or maximum settings to get a good experience, and 1440p monitors are often only modestly more expensive than 1080p models now.

One practical option would be to buy one 1080p monitor and one 1440p monitor. You could use the 1440p display for most games and switch to the 1080p screen for titles that are too demanding. That gives you some flexibility, although two matching 1440p monitors would provide a cleaner desktop setup.

A 34-inch 1440p ultrawide could also be worth considering if you want more desktop space, but it places a heavier load on the GPU than standard 2560×1440. For your hardware, regular 27-inch 1440p monitors are the safer choice if gaming performance is the priority.

MellowPine42: That makes sense. Being able to lower settings or resolution when needed is probably more useful than buying a monitor around the most demanding games.
