Should I upgrade my AM4 system or move to AM5 for 1440p gaming?

I'm deciding whether to keep my current AM4 platform and upgrade from a Ryzen 5 5600 to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D for about $320 before tax, or switch to an AM5 bundle from a nearby computer retailer. My current system has 32GB of 3600MHz memory and a B550 DS3H AC motherboard. The upgrade would be paired with an RX 9070 XT for 1440p gaming.
The AM5 options include a Ryzen 5 7500X3D with a micro-ATX motherboard, which would fit my current case, but the bundle only includes a single 16GB memory stick. I keep programs such as Spotify, Google, and Discord open while gaming, so I'm concerned that 16GB may be limiting. I could potentially sell my current case and move to the Ryzen 5 7600X3D bundle with an X870 or B650 motherboard, but that would add more cost and hassle. Which path offers the better value and gaming performance?

AM5 makes more sense if youโre comfortable selling your current parts and can handle being without the system temporarily. The newer socket gives you a better future upgrade path, but remember to budget for a second matching memory module. Running two sticks is preferable to using a single 16GB stick, especially with background applications open.

Iโd lean toward the 7600X3D bundle if you decide to move to AM5. Sixteen gigabytes should be usable for gaming and your background apps, but adding a second matching stick later would improve capacity and dual-channel performance. Just make sure the total cost of the bundle, extra memory, and any new case is worth it compared with the much simpler 5800X3D upgrade.

The 5800X3D should pair well with an RX 9070 XT and shouldnโt meaningfully bottleneck it at 1440p. If you can get the processor for around $300, keeping your current motherboard and 32GB of RAM is probably the best value. You could put the money saved toward another component instead of replacing the whole platform.

MellowPine47: The AM5 bundle would actually cost about $450, so the price difference is smaller than $600, but Iโm still weighing the extra upgrade path against keeping my existing RAM and board.
