Should I upgrade my CPU or move to DDR5 for 280Hz Valorant?

I mainly play Valorant and want a consistent 280 FPS to match my 280Hz monitor. My current system has a Ryzen 5 5500, Radeon RX 6600, MSI B550 Gaming Gen3 motherboard, and 16GB of Corsair DDR4-3600 memory. I currently average around 140 FPS, with noticeably poor 1% lows. Since memory prices are high and may not drop soon, I'm deciding between staying on AM4 with a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D while keeping my current motherboard and RAM, or moving to a newer platform with 32GB of DDR5 and a new CPU. Valorant is essentially the only game I care about. What upgrade would give me the most consistent performance, particularly if I'm playing at 1080p?

More RAM by itself wonโt increase your average FPS or fix the 1% lows unless youโre actually running out of memory. For Valorant at 1080p, the Ryzen 5 5500 is more likely to be the limitation, so upgrading to a 5700X3D or 5800X3D while keeping your current board and DDR4 is the simplest route. Check your motherboardโs CPU support list and update the BIOS first.

The best choice depends on your budget. A 5700X3D or 5800X3D is the cheaper option and lets you keep the motherboard and memory, while a Ryzen 5 7600X, 9600X, or similar AM5 setup costs more but gives you a future upgrade path. For Valorant specifically, Iโd prioritize the CPU before buying faster or more RAM.

If youโre playing at 1080p, an X3D AM4 chip should be a strong upgrade and may be enough to reach very high frame rates with the RX 6600. At 1440p, consistently reaching 280 FPS becomes much more demanding and a full platform or GPU upgrade may make more sense. Benchmark results will vary with settings and the exact map or situation.

A GPU upgrade can help in games that are graphics-limited, but Valorant at 1080p is commonly more CPU-limited, especially when targeting 280 FPS. Your RX 6600 may be adequate if GPU usage is low while the CPU is near its limit. Monitor CPU and GPU utilization during gameplay before deciding, but based on your current hardware and target, Iโd start with the CPU.
MellowPine47: Valorant is the only game I mentioned, so thatโs the main performance target. Iโm not trying to optimize for more demanding games.

MellowPine47: Is a GPU upgrade really worthwhile here? Valorant doesnโt seem especially GPU-heavy, so Iโm wondering whether the CPU is the main issue.
