Should I upgrade my current PC or build a new system now?

I built my current PC several years ago and usually upgrade only when I feel the need to skip a few hardware generations. It currently has a stock Ryzen 5 3600X, 32GB of DDR4-3200, an RTX 3070 8GB, a 650W PSU, an ASUS TUF X570-Plus motherboard, and an inexpensive case with poor airflow.

I mainly play at 1440p across two monitors, with games such as Escape from Tarkov, Company of Heroes, Hearts of Iron IV, Left 4 Dead 2, Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, Red Dead Redemption 2, Satisfactory, Baldur's Gate 3, Helldivers 2, and others. I've also started playing PCVR and want to try more demanding VR mods. In addition, I primarily use Linux, where I've had some frustrating experiences with NVIDIA drivers, Steam packages, VR performance, and local AI workloads.

I recently ordered an AMD RX 9070 XT because I expect it to improve Linux compatibility, provide more VRAM, and reduce some of my VR stuttering. However, that also means I should probably replace my 650W PSU and case, since the current case is cramped and sometimes overheats. I'm also concerned that the Ryzen 5 3600X could bottleneck the new GPU.

I can afford a complete rebuild, and in my region the Ryzen 7 5800X3D costs almost the same as a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The downside is that DDR5 is extremely expensive, and I'm worried AM5 may be nearing the end of its useful upgrade cycle. My original plan was to make a modest AM4 upgrade and wait for a future platform such as AM6, but prices keep rising and I could sell my existing system as a complete unit.

Would it make more sense to replace only the CPU, PSU, and case, build a new AM5 system now, or simply make a smaller AM4 upgrade and wait a couple of years?

A 5800X3D is still an excellent gaming upgrade for AM4 and should be more than capable of driving that GPU at 1440p. Its extra cache can be particularly useful in CPU-heavy games such as Tarkov. If you can find one at a reasonable price, keeping your motherboard and DDR4 would let you spend the money on the PSU and case instead of replacing an entire platform.

That was my original plan. My hesitation is that the 5800X3D costs almost the same as a 9800X3D here, so I'm wondering whether paying nearly the same amount for a newer platform makes more sense.

If you genuinely have the money and already need a PSU and case, building now is reasonable. Hardware prices can move upward, and nobody can reliably predict when the next platform will arrive or what its launch pricing will look like. Waiting only makes sense if your current system is still doing everything you need or if you specifically want to avoid paying the DDR5 premium.

The main concern is spending heavily on a platform that may only have one major CPU generation left. I don't want the next upgrade to require another motherboard and memory replacement.

Since you already own 32GB of DDR4, another option is an affordable DDR4-compatible CPU and motherboard combination rather than paying the current DDR5 markup. A modern midrange CPU can offer a strong improvement without putting the entire budget into a platform transition. Just check motherboard support, power delivery, and the total cost before comparing it with AM4 or AM5.

You don't necessarily need to jump straight to a complete rebuild. A cheaper AM4 CPU upgrade could keep the system usable for another couple of years, while a quality 850W PSU and a well-ventilated case are worthwhile regardless of the platform you eventually choose. The 3600X may limit minimum frame rates in some CPU-heavy games, but it won't make the new GPU unusable.

That might be the most financially sensible route: replace the 3600X with something like a 5600-class chip, fix the cooling and power situation, and wait until a genuinely bigger platform upgrade is available.

I would base the decision on actual performance problems rather than the platform's age. AM5 still has a useful upgrade path, but future platforms will always be faster and may use new memory standards. If Linux, VR, and local AI are the main reasons for upgrading, the new GPU, a better case, and a reliable PSU may solve most of the practical issues; upgrade the CPU only if monitoring shows it is actually limiting your frame rates.
