My AM4 system is approaching six years old and currently has a Ryzen 5 5600X, 32GB of T-FORCE DDR4-3600 memory, an ASUS TUF RTX 3060 Ti 8GB, an ASUS Prime B550-Plus motherboard, and a 750W EVGA Gold power supply.
I'm planning to move to a 1440p OLED monitor, ideally at 360Hz or 480Hz, while keeping my current 1080p 240Hz display as a second screen. I'd also appreciate panel suggestions.
For competitive games such as CS2 and Battlefield 6, I care about very high frame rates and consistent 1% lows. For demanding single-player games like Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, Space Marine 2, and Crimson Desert, I'd be happy with more than 100 FPS at high settings. I don't need maximum ray tracing, but I would like to use some ray tracing or path tracing where practical.
The upgrade decision is difficult because these workloads emphasize different components. Competitive games at very high refresh rates can become CPU-limited, while 1440p AAA gaming is much more dependent on the GPU. If I can only upgrade one part first, would a stronger GPU provide the bigger improvement, and would the Ryzen 5 5600X significantly hold it back at 1440p?
I'm considering a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti or a comparable Radeon card while keeping the current CPU and motherboard for now. Alternatively, I could extend the AM4 platform with a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D. How much does upscaling change the balance at 1440p? Should I prioritize native rendering, or budget around technologies such as upscaling and frame generation?

At 1440p, a Ryzen 5 5600X paired with a significantly faster GPU should still provide a good experience in most games. One example of a similar setup managed roughly 170 FPS in competitive shooters at high settings, although a newer X3D processor can push considerably higher averages and better lows when targeting 240Hz or beyond. You can also cap the frame rate slightly below the monitor’s maximum to reduce load and improve frame-time consistency.
Your best value path is probably to keep the motherboard, memory, and CPU for now, install the stronger GPU, and measure actual CPU limits in the games you play. If competitive titles fail to deliver the frame rates or 1% lows you want at the new monitor’s refresh rate, then move to a 5700X3D or 5800X3D. A full AM5 rebuild can wait until the current platform no longer meets your needs.
A 16GB RTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT would be a reasonable match for your planned display and should offer better longevity than a smaller upgrade. Upscaling is useful at 1440p, particularly in ray-traced games, but it shouldn’t be treated as a substitute for sufficient native GPU performance. Use native rendering when the frame rate is already comfortable, then enable quality-mode upscaling or frame generation when you need extra performance. Your 750W Gold PSU may be adequate, but check the exact model, connector requirements, and the graphics card manufacturer’s recommendation before buying.
If you want to keep the AM4 system for several more years, the Ryzen 7 5700X3D is probably the sensible upgrade. The 5800X3D is also excellent for competitive games, but it may not be worth paying a large premium for one now. An X3D chip is most valuable when you are CPU-limited at 1080p or chasing extremely high frame rates; at 1440p with a powerful GPU, the benefit is usually smaller in GPU-heavy games.
For this mix of games, I’d upgrade the GPU first. A card around the RTX 5070 Ti or Radeon RX 9070 XT level should make a much larger difference in demanding 1440p games, especially since the RTX 3060 Ti is already starting to struggle in newer titles. The Ryzen 5 5600X is still capable at 1440p, and you can replace it later with a 5700X3D or 5800X3D if high-refresh competitive gaming exposes a CPU limit.
