I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 5600X with an RTX 3060 12GB. I originally considered upgrading the CPU, but the available X3D models are out of stock, so I'm looking at a GPU upgrade instead. I found a used RTX 4070 for €480 and a used RX 9060 XT 16GB for €400. I play at 1080p and aim for 240Hz, and I'm located in Greece, where hardware prices can be unusual. The RTX 4070 is roughly 20% faster on average, and 12GB of VRAM is still plenty for 1080p gaming. At those prices, I’d lean toward the 4070, assuming its condition is good.
For competitive games at 1080p, the 4070 makes more sense. You’re more likely to run into a CPU limit with the Ryzen 5 5600X than a VRAM limit, especially if you’re targeting very high refresh rates.
The RX 9060 XT is worth considering if you want to spend less, but check new prices first. If a new 16GB model is only around €420–€450 locally, a used one at €400 doesn’t offer much savings. Try negotiating the price down, while the €480 4070 is the stronger upgrade.
You could also compare the cost of newer cards such as an RTX 5070 or save for something faster like an RX 9070 XT, RX 7900 XT, or used RTX 4080. However, for a straightforward 1080p upgrade, those options may be unnecessary unless you plan to move to 1440p or want the card to last for many years.
