Should I upgrade my Ryzen 7 5800X and 32GB RAM for free?

I currently have a Ryzen 7 5800X on a Gigabyte B550 motherboard, paired with an RTX 5070, 32GB of Corsair DDR4-3200 memory in a 4x8GB configuration, 1TB of SSD storage, a Thermalright Aqua Elite 360 AIO, and a 750W Corsair power supply in a Thermalright A70 case.

A friend is building a new PC and offered me his used Ryzen 9 5900X and 32GB of G.Skill Trident DDR4-3600 memory in a 2x16GB kit for free. Should I install these parts, keep my current setup, or do something else?

You could simply keep the donated parts as spares, but installing them is a reasonable choice if you use applications that benefit from more cores. There is no need to sell them or replace your whole system. If you mainly play games and your current PC is stable, the upgrade is optional rather than essential.

Take both. The 5900X gives you four additional cores and eight extra threads, which can help with rendering, streaming, compiling, and other productivity workloads. The gaming improvement will be minimal, though, since the 5800X and 5900X perform very similarly in games. The 2x16GB 3600MHz kit is a nice upgrade because two sticks are often easier to run reliably than four, and 3600MHz can work well with Ryzen 5000 in a 1:1 memory setup. Keep your current RAM as a backup.

The memory may be the more noticeable change in terms of stability and configuration, especially if your current four-stick kit needs reduced speeds or extra voltage.

Since the parts are free, there is little reason not to accept them. Just update the motherboard BIOS if necessary, install the 5900X, enable the memory profile, and test stability. Make sure the RAM is DDR4, since your B550 board does not support DDR5. For gaming alone, this is more of a sidegrade than a major CPU upgrade, but it gives you extra headroom for multitasking and productivity.

I agree that expectations should be realistic. With an RTX 5070, the graphics card will usually matter more for gaming performance, so don’t expect a large FPS increase from the 5900X.
