Should I Upgrade to Ryzen 7 7700X or Settle for Intel i5-11400F?

I'm planning to upgrade my CPU from the i3-10100F. I found an AMD Ryzen 7 7700X for £170, but I'd also need a new motherboard since my MSI H510M-A PRO can't support it. The issue is the high cost of DDR5 RAM; 32GB costs around £200-300+, which is quite a stretch for my budget. Would it be better to get an i5-11400F for around £80 and use it with my current motherboard instead? I'm concerned about buying an outdated CPU. Are there other options I haven't considered?

You could consider the Intel i5-14600K paired with a DDR4 motherboard. It's an excellent processor and probably offers comparable gaming performance to the 7700X, even with the DDR4 RAM. Plus, you won't have to deal with the price hike on DDR5 right now! While the 7700X is great, DDR5 costs are just too high currently, so the 14600K makes sense if you want to save money and still get good performance.

Good point! The 14600K does perform really well, and it’s still a solid choice even against newer options. Just make sure your motherboard supports it since you might need to upgrade to fully benefit from it.

I’d also check out the i7-10700F since it’s compatible with your current motherboard. It's a good option if you're looking for something that can give you a boost without the hassle of entirely new components.
