Should I Use LUKS on LVM or LVM on LUKS?

I'm trying to decide whether to set up LUKS on LVM or LVM on LUKS for disk encryption and management. I've seen both options suggested, and I want to understand which configuration is generally better and why. Are there any advantages to one approach over the other? Also, I want to set up RAID, so how does that factor into the decision?

Whoa, just saw a bunch of posts about this! I think going LVM on LUKS avoids double configurations, which leads to a cleaner setup. But make sure you don't mix things up! Just try to focus on one setup.

Setting up LVM on LUKS provides extra security since the NSA can't snoop on your boot partition and volume metadata. Also, entering just one password at boot is super convenient!

The consensus seems to be that it's better to set up LUKS on top of LVM. This way, your disk can be encrypted while still allowing flexible volume management. It streamlines the process and makes it easier to handle your partitions later. Plus, you only have to remember one password during boot, which simplifies things!

That makes sense! I was wondering if there's any specific reason to partition at all if I'm going LVM on LUKS.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I want RAID too. Just feels overwhelming with so many options.
