I'm planning to upgrade to an RTX 5080 and currently have a Ryzen 5 9600X. I'm wondering whether that processor will hold the GPU back, especially at 1440p or 4K. My first thought was to buy a Ryzen 7 9800X3D now, but with Zen 6 expected soon, I could also keep using the 9600X and wait. Prices have been fairly stable, and I'm not in a rush, so I'd appreciate advice on whether upgrading now is worthwhile or if waiting makes more sense.

I’d wait for Zen 6 if you’re not in a hurry. New CPUs could offer a worthwhile performance jump, and older X3D chips may become cheaper afterward. The decision matters more at 1080p or very high refresh rates than it does at 1440p or 4K.
The 9800X3D is still an excellent choice if you want a proven upgrade today, especially for competitive games, high-refresh gaming, or better 1% lows. It’s also a strong long-term processor, but the upgrade is difficult to justify if your current system already delivers the frame rates you want.
The 9600X is already a strong gaming CPU and should pair perfectly well with a 5080 at 1440p or 4K. At those resolutions, the GPU will usually be the limiting factor, so a 9800X3D may not provide a noticeable average-FPS improvement.
That makes sense. I’m mainly playing at 1440p, so I’ll probably keep the 9600X for now and see what the next generation brings.
