Spilled Coke Zero on my gaming laptop—what should I do overnight?

I spilled more than half a cup of Coke Zero over my Lenovo LOQ gaming laptop, soaking the trackpad and about half of the keyboard. I immediately shut it down, unplugged it, flipped it into an upside-down tent shape, and cleaned what I could. A few drops have slowly drained out. It's currently nighttime, and I'm planning to take it to a repair shop tomorrow. What should I do until then, and is there anything I should avoid?

Taking it to a repair shop tomorrow is the right move. Keep it powered off, don’t reconnect the charger, and don’t press the keyboard or trackpad any more than necessary. Tell the technician exactly what spilled and which areas were soaked so they can check for residue and corrosion.

Do not turn it back on to test it. Unplug the charger and, if you’re comfortable opening the bottom cover, disconnect the internal battery too. Keeping the laptop powered while liquid or residue is present can cause a short and make the damage worse. Leave it open and upside down somewhere dry with good airflow until you can get it serviced.

The battery can still supply power even when the laptop is shut down, so disconnecting it is important if you can do that safely. Otherwise, leave it completely untouched for the repair shop.

Coke leaves sugary residue behind even after the liquid evaporates, so simply waiting for it to dry may not be enough. A technician should open it, disconnect the battery, and clean the affected parts properly. High-purity isopropyl alcohol is commonly used for electronics cleaning, but don’t pour liquid into the laptop or scrub components unless you know exactly what you’re doing.

Avoid using a hair dryer, rice, or other heat-based methods. They can push the liquid farther inside or create static and heat damage.
