Spilled Milk on a Laptop: Is It Safe to Keep Using?

About half an hour ago, I spilled milk across the keyboard of a laptop that belongs to someone else. I immediately unplugged the power cable, wiped up as much as I could with a tissue, and turned the laptop upside down to drain. It still powered on and seems to work, but I'm worried that liquid may have reached the internals and could cause problems later as it dries or leaves residue. I also tried removing the keys and may have damaged one keycap. That key is now partly stuck and sitting at an angle, so I stopped trying to pry it off because I'm afraid of making things worse. I can't get to a repair shop right now. Should I stop using the laptop, open it to disconnect the battery, or try to fix the key? How can I tell whether it's completely dry?

Donโ€™t assume itโ€™s safe just because it powers on. Milk can leave residue that causes corrosion or electrical problems later. Shut it down, unplug it, and disconnect the battery if you can do that safely. Leave it open and upside down in a dry, ventilated place for at least a day or two. Avoid using heat, and donโ€™t keep testing it while there may still be moisture inside.

QuartzPanda18: There isnโ€™t a reliable way to confirm the inside is dry without opening it. If you canโ€™t reach a repair shop, the safest home step is to remove the bottom cover and disconnect the battery, provided you have the right screwdriver and feel comfortable doing it.

The keyboard may be the only part that needs replacing, but donโ€™t force the slanted keycap. Laptop key mechanisms are fragile, and prying from the wrong direction can break the hinge underneath. Once the machine is safe and dry, the individual key or the whole keyboard can usually be replaced, depending on the model. A cheap external keyboard is a temporary workaround.

If you have the proper tools, look up a disassembly guide for the exact laptop model. Disconnect the battery first, then inspect the motherboard and surrounding areas for milk. Any visible residue should be cleaned carefully with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol and allowed to dry completely before reconnecting power. If youโ€™re unsure, donโ€™t scrape or poke at the components.
