Starting From Zero in Tech: What Should I Learn First?

I'm completely new to technology and keep getting confused by all the terminology. Could someone explain the basics in simple, beginner-friendly language? If you were starting from zero in 2026, what learning path would you follow, and which free or affordable resources would you recommend?

A few useful programming ideas are scope, functions, procedures, recursion, and libraries. Scope describes where a variable can be usedโfor example, a variable created inside a function usually cannot be accessed outside it. A function performs a task and returns a result, while a procedure is generally used for an action without an important return value. Recursion means solving a problem by repeatedly applying the same smaller process, like narrowing down a search by checking the middle of a list. Programming is mostly about breaking a large task into smaller, reusable steps. Start with simple exercises, write down what each step should do, and only learn new terminology when you encounter it.

Donโt try to learn โtechโ all at once because it covers far too much. Pick one starting path, such as programming. Python is a friendly first language. Then learn the basics of Git for managing code, build tiny projects like a calculator or to-do list, and gradually learn databases and APIs. After that, choose a direction such as web development, mobile apps, data and AI, or cybersecurity. Building projects is more useful than watching endless tutorials. When terms like frontend, backend, framework, HTTP, or API seem confusing, look them up as they come up in a real projectโtheir meanings become much clearer through practice.
