Hey everyone! I've been waiting on an order for a new server to create a virtual environment with SQL and a few other VMs for about two weeks now. Normally, I rely on Dell, but they seem to be super bogged down with component shortages, especially with NVMe drives. I was quoted over 30 days for my specified configuration, which seems way too long. They've even tried to push SATA SSDs on me, which I don't want. I've also reached out to Lenovo, but haven't heard back, and I'm considering looking at HPE even though I'm not keen on them. At this point, I'm wondering if I should just check out the Dell outlet for a refurbished system instead. Is anyone else facing delays in getting server hardware with good specs? Should I expect these long lead times for medium to high-end systems going forward? Thanks for any insights!

If you're open to secondhand or refurbished gear, Amazon can be a fantastic spot for used server hardware. I picked up an R640 for under $1000!
It sounds frustrating! Unfortunately, it seems like the whole world is facing parts shortages right now. I’d say 30 days isn’t terrible considering the current state of things. Many companies experienced over 60-week waits during the pandemic. If you need hardware sooner, it could be a planning oversight on your part, but still, good luck finding anything better with another vendor right now!
Exactly! Honestly, if you’re getting a 30-day timeline now, you might want to take it and run with it.
You might want to check out companies like TechMikeNY, SaveMyServer, or ServerMonkey. They offer refurbished and new hardware. You could potentially snag a generation-old refurb with a warranty at a much better price, almost like getting two for the cost of one new from Dell! Plus, they even have in-house service contracts. We switched to them during COVID when lead times skyrocketed, and it’s worked out well!
Definitely agree with going with ServerMonkey; their prices are fair, and I've had good experiences with them too.
If you have an existing Dell setup, it might be best to stick with refurb units rather than introducing a new vendor just to meet a deadline. You’re likely to run into the same supply issues everywhere else anyway.
I hear you! I managed to find some refurb Dell gear through Amazon during the shortages, which helped fill immediate needs.
Thanks for the reassurance! Looks like we’ll just have to adapt to this new norm and ride it out.
30 days for a server? I could help you out with some parts if you're willing to pay!

Good call! But just be sure to check who the actual seller is and what kind of support and warranty they offer.
