Struggling to Install Drivers for My Nvidia 4090 on Linux Mint

Hey everyone! I've just jumped into the Nvidia world with a 4090 GPU. Initially, I was using my integrated graphics (on a MSI G850 motherboard), but when I tried to install the drivers through Linux Mint's driver manager, I ended up unable to boot the system. I had to wipe everything and reinstall Mint. I'm wondering if anyone else has experience using a 4090 with Linux Mint, or if I should just switch back to Ubuntu since it might be a bit more stable. Also, what version of the Nvidia driver would you recommend? I'd really appreciate any help!

It might be worth considering a different distro with better support for your GPU, like Arch-based ones. If Mint isn’t delivering the right drivers, it's likely Ubuntu will face the same issues. You could also try installing the drivers manually using a DKMS package if Mint messed up the installation.

I've run into problems before with the initram boot image being too large. You should search for solutions online—there are plenty out there. One method that worked for me was booting with a secondary kernel, then installing the Nvidia drivers, followed by dracut to rebuild the boot image.

I’m in a bit of a budget crunch after buying the 4090, so for now, I’m just using it with my TV. I guess I’ll have to wait until next month to set it up properly with a monitor. Thanks for the tips!

Running it on a TV could work for the time being, but I totally get it! A monitor makes all the difference, especially for gaming. Hang in there, you’ll get it sorted!
