Hey everyone, I'm a sysadmin facing some serious challenges with FSLogix right now. We're running an RDS farm with four Windows 2022 servers, a broker, and a shared area for VHDX profiles, where users access remote applications like Office, Outlook, and our ERP system. Unfortunately, Microsoft support hasn't been much help, and it's becoming really frustrating.
We're currently using an older version of FSLogix, prior to the 3.xx branch, because the newer versions caused problems like stuck profiles and filling up the profile share with temporary VHDX files. In addition, we have a lot of issues, particularly with classic Outlook. Some of the problems we've encountered include:
- Outlook asks for re-authentication multiple times daily, and roamidentity is disabled, which isn't helpful since our version doesn't support it.
- Outlook occasionally freezes or opens emails with blank pages.
- Emails from the ERP program are hit or miss; the Outlook window needs to be open, and even then, it doesn't work all the time.
- VHDX compaction doesn't seem to be functioning properly, even though all required services are running and there's ample free space.
- We frequently have to delete Office container VHDX files for some users due to persistent Outlook freezes. I'm even considering getting rid of those containers altogether.
I've reviewed the configuration, applied the best practices, and followed various recommendations, but I'm at my wit's end. If anyone has advice or pointers to help me solve these issues, I'd really appreciate it!

Addressing Office issues could help. Make sure you're using shared computer licenses, and check your registry settings for ClickToRun. If activation issues persist, try clearing certain folders from the user profile; it often helps!
It sounds like there are a few things to check on your end. Are your RDS hosts hybrid joined? Also, consulting the FSLogix profile logs could provide insight into why compaction isn’t running as expected. They’re really helpful for troubleshooting.
You should definitely try upgrading to the latest version of FSLogix. I've had much better luck with it—it's just more stable overall!
User Profile Disks are a solid solution for your setup if you're not using Teams or OneDrive. They've worked great for us!
Make sure cached mode is disabled for users on the RD servers. It can lead to a lot of headaches. If you switched it recently, users may need a registry tweak or a profile reset to adjust accordingly.
In my experience, Outlook doesn’t do well in live mode either. Using OST usually helps.

Yeah, cached mode is actually enabled but limited to around 3-6 months—wasn't my choice, but I had to go along with it.
