I'm a computer science student and really fascinated by programming; however, I often struggle to stay focused, especially when I'm alone. I find it hard to avoid distractions like YouTube or books. Are there any fellow programmers with ADHD who can share their experiences and helpful strategies for staying productive?

Try creating a separate browser profile just for your studies. Only save bookmarks related to what you're working on. ADHD often makes it easier to lose focus with too many temptations visible. Also, consider putting timers on your work sessions—having a deadline can really boost productivity!

I found that setting myself up in distraction-free environments was crucial. For example, when I needed to study, I'd eliminate anything that might distract me - even if that meant hiding my phone out of reach. If I was programming, I'd use a fullscreen mode for my code editor and minimize everything else. Removing clutter helped me to hyperfocus, especially since I really enjoy coding.

Finding practical applications for what you're learning is key. Whether it's using VBA for work or modifying your favorite game's functionality with Lua, real-world applications make the skills feel more valuable and keep your interest piqued. It's a great way to transition between projects too when you start feeling bored.

Switching to shorter, focused study sessions really helped me. Instead of long blocks of study time, I’d do 10–20 minutes of intense focus. The immediate payoff gives you a burst of motivation—perfect for those of us with ADHD. Hang in there; you're not alone in this journey!

Honestly, medication has made a world of difference for me. I also like to set up my workspace without the pressure to immediately dive into the work. Just opening my IDE and organizing my files helps me ease into my tasks without overwhelming myself right at the start. Baby steps often lead to better focus for me.

The Pomodoro technique works wonders! Plus, look into 'focus music' tailored for ADHD; it can really help maintain concentration. And remember, mastering the fundamentals of computer science can provide a solid foundation that makes it easier to learn new languages. Just keep practicing on projects you're excited about; passion helps drive focus!
