Trouble Booting Linux Mint from USB on My Old PC

I recently got my hands on an old HP EliteOne G2 23-inch PC and decided to install the latest version of Linux Mint Cinnamon. The problem is, the PC doesn't have any operating system on it right now. I struggled for a while since my USB flash drive wouldn't show up in the boot menu. After some trial and error, I used Rufus to dd the image instead of using the ISO, which allowed me to boot into live mode. However, after I turned the PC off, the USB didn't show up in the boot menu again under any circumstances—different ports, settings in BIOS, enabling legacy, disabling secure boot, allowing USB boot… nothing worked. Interestingly, the USB works fine on my laptop. What can I do to resolve this?

Have you checked if updating the BIOS makes a difference? It could be a compatibility issue with your current settings. Also, don’t forget to try switching USB ports again—you mentioned it didn’t help, but sometimes it might work with a good restart after swapping.

I had a similar issue before; what worked for me was changing a specific setting in the BIOS. I set the "boot device" option to "disabled," and after that, it booted just fine from the flash drive. You might want to look for that setting to see if it helps you too!

That’s interesting! What exactly do you mean by boot device? I don’t see an option like that.

If possible, use another computer to install Linux Mint on the USB drive. Choose the OEM option during installation, and once it’s done, transfer the USB back to your HP EliteOne. That method worked for me in the past!

Sometimes just unplugging and re-plugging the USB can help—maybe after rebooting the PC. Make sure it’s firmly connected. And just to double-check, have you tried different USB sticks, or does that work only on your laptop?
