UK visitor buying an unlocked iPhone 17 in New York: trade-in and eSIM advice

I'm visiting New York from the UK and am considering buying an unlocked iPhone 17 outright from an Apple Store because the US price appears considerably lower. I'd like to trade in my current OnePlus 13 at the same time and use the credit toward the purchase. Can Apple assess and accept the phone in-store, and would I need to hand it over immediately, or could I transfer my data and make sure the new phone works first? I'd also like to know whether Apple US accepts a OnePlus 13 for trade-in. Since US iPhone models are eSIM-only, I'm concerned about transferring my UK number from a physical SIM. Is it practical to convert the number to an eSIM while still in the US, and are there any UK carrier or compatibility issues? I'd also appreciate advice about warranty coverage, network differences, and anything else an international visitor should consider before buying a US model for permanent use in the UK.

The safest approach is to wait until youโ€™re back in the UK before converting your physical SIM to an eSIM. During the transfer, the old SIM may stop working before the new eSIM activates, leaving you temporarily without access to your number. That said, some UK carriers support automatic SIM-to-eSIM conversion, and activation can work abroad if you have reliable Wi-Fi.

Warranty service may be available internationally, but the process and available parts or service options can differ by country. A US model can also have different cellular bands or hardware connections from the UK version, so check compatibility with your UK carrier before buying. You generally wonโ€™t receive the same UK consumer-law protections that apply when purchasing from a UK retailer.

CopperWillow31: Apple may be able to help with setup in the store, including transferring data, but that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean you can keep the old phone after the trade-in has been finalized. Ask the store about the exact handover timing before accepting the trade-in value.

A store trade-in and setup can take several hours, and completing the transfer may still require extra time afterward for passwords, apps, and other settings. If possible, back up the OnePlus thoroughly before visiting the store. Also confirm in advance that the specific OnePlus model is eligible for Appleโ€™s current US trade-in program; Android eligibility and values can vary by model and condition.

Some travellers have successfully activated eSIM-only phones in the US, especially over hotel Wi-Fi. Carrier support matters more than the country youโ€™re in, so check directly with your UK provider whether they allow SIM-to-eSIM conversion overseas and whether your account can activate the eSIM on the new device. If you trade in your old phone first, make sure you have another way to receive verification codes.
