Understanding the APC SMX2200 Rackmount UPS and Its Features

Hey everyone! I'm looking for some insights into the various types of UPS systems, particularly the APC SMX2200 rackmount UPS. I've done some research and have questions about how this unit works.

1. The APC SMX2200 is classified as a line-interactive UPS, but it also claims to produce a 'pure sine wave' output. I'm confused because I thought pure sine wave meant there's no inverter used, and no simulated sine wave output. How exactly does this unit create a pure sine wave when running on battery? Also, I've seen some double conversion models advertised as pure sine wave, but they seemingly always utilize the inverter. What's going on here?

2. I've noticed that the SMX2200 has a 'green mode' feature that appears to affect whether the inverter is constantly active. If I turn off the green mode, does that mean the inverter will always be on, effectively transforming it into a double conversion UPS?

Thanks in advance for any clarification you can provide! 🙂

Seems like we’re talking about battery backups here, right? Just clarifying because some folks mix up terms.

You're definitely on the right track with wanting a pure sine wave for sensitive devices like servers. If your servers need it and the UPS doesn't provide it, you could be in trouble during an outage. Just FYI, many 'pure sine wave' UPS systems still have an inverter involved. They produce pure sine wave outputs using specific techniques like PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), which filters to create a smooth sine wave from the battery. Regarding the SMX2200, it looks like it can operate in different modes depending on whether green mode is enabled or not, so it might switch between line-interactive and a double-conversion setup.

If you're still on the fence about a UPS, I’d recommend checking out Eaton's lineup over APC's. APC isn't quite as reliable as it used to be, and you might get a better performance out of Eaton.
