Upgrading Laptop RAM: What Do I Need to Know?

I recently purchased a new laptop with the following specs: RTX 5050, AMD Ryzen 5 240, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and a 512GB SSD. I got it for $600 on sale and am primarily using it for productivity and gaming as I frequently move around. I'm looking to upgrade the RAM and know I need an SDRAM SO-DIMM DDR5 component. Given the recent spike in RAM prices, I'm wondering if it's a bad idea to buy another 16GB stick. Besides ensuring the correct sizing and avoiding a DDR4/DRE5 mix, are there other considerations I should have before investing in a new RAM stick? I don't mind if the new stick has to downclock for compatibility. Do brand differences matter? Also, I have confirmed that my model has 2 RAM slots and that I've already installed the 16GB stick. The model number is ANV16-42-R309.

Mixing different RAM kits can lead to issues, including boot failures, so it’s wise to be cautious. Spending a little extra on a 32GB kit now might save you headaches later, especially since it sounds like you're aiming for performance in both productivity and gaming.

I agree! I’m leaning towards getting a 32GB kit. Thanks for the warning!

Honestly, I'm surprised to see a new laptop with a Ryzen 240. I thought those were phased out! Just double-check it's not mislabelled as a 2400, and you should be good to go.

Just to clarify, mine is the Ryzen 5 240, not the 2400. Sorry for the mix-up!

It's crucial to know your laptop model, as some only support one RAM slot. Since you confirmed you have 2 slots, you're set to upgrade. But be cautious about mixing different RAM kits; compatibility isn't guaranteed and may lead to boot issues.

I appreciate the heads up! I'm careful about mixing but still gathering info before I buy.

Mixing RAM sticks can be hit or miss. Ideally, you want a stick with specifications matching your current one, but I totally get that can be tough to find right now. If you can, try to find a matching stick, but if not, aim for something really close.

Knowing your laptop's exact model helps narrow things down. Since you mentioned you already have 2 slots, it's safe to add another 16GB module. Just make sure to check specs with something like CPU-Z. If you can't find an exact match, consider getting a 32GB kit (2x16GB), which is likely to be reliable.

Thanks for the advice! The model number for my laptop is ANV16-42-R309, and I already checked that it has 2 slots with 16GB in one.

Good catch on the slots! That will make upgrading much easier.
