I had an X570 motherboard that was working before its AM4 socket was replaced. The original socket had been damaged during a cooler removal incident, leaving one DRAM channel unusable, so I purchased a replacement socket from an overseas marketplace and took the board to a local repair technician. After the socket was replaced, the motherboard would no longer power on.

The technician said the replacement socket used 0.4 mm solder balls, while the board required 0.5 mm balls, and claimed that 0.4 mm sockets are only suitable for lower-end boards such as A320 models rather than boards like the X570 or B450. I have not been able to find reliable documentation confirming that chipset-specific solder-ball sizes are required.

Is this explanation technically accurate? Could using the wrong ball size prevent an AM4 motherboard from powering on, or are there more likely causes related to the socket replacement itself? I am looking for a well-supported explanation rather than speculation.

The board’s original failure still matters when diagnosing the repair. A cooler-related socket incident can damage more than the visible socket, and the replacement process can also cause lifted pads, shorts, misalignment, poor solder joints, or board flex damage. Any of those could result in a completely dead board, so the solder-ball explanation should not be accepted without inspection and measurements.

Even if the ball size was unsuitable, simply saying it used 0.4 mm balls does not explain the failure by itself. The important questions are whether the replacement socket matches the original mechanically and electrically, whether every pad made a reliable connection, and whether the board was checked for shorts or damaged traces after installation. A repair shop should be able to verify those points under magnification and with resistance or continuity measurements.

AM4 sockets can use different solder-ball sizes depending on the socket and PCB design, so the technician’s general claim is plausible. However, chipset names alone do not prove which size is required: an X570 board is not automatically incompatible with every socket using 0.4 mm balls, and the exact socket part, pad layout, standoff height, and reflow process matter.

That may be true, but it would be useful to see a manufacturer part number or datasheet confirming that particular ball size is required for this board. Without that, it is still only a possible explanation rather than a diagnosis.
