What adapter lets me run a 12V car tire inflator from a wall outlet?

I have a 12V tire inflator that normally plugs into a car's cigarette-lighter socket. I use it mostly for my bicycle, so it would be much more convenient to run it inside my apartment from a regular wall outlet. What should I search for, and are there any important voltage or amperage requirements? I'd prefer to keep using this pump instead of buying a separate bike pump.

Look for an AC-to-DC power supply with a 12V cigarette-lighter socket. The wall provides AC, while the pump expects 12V DC. Make sure the adapter’s current rating is at least as high as the pump’s requirement; inflators can draw several amps, so small low-power adapters may shut down or overheat.

That makes sense—thanks! I’ll check the pump’s label and manual before choosing one.

There are compact rechargeable bicycle inflators that may be less hassle than using a wall adapter, and some can cost about the same. But if you want to keep the current pump, a properly rated 12V AC-to-DC converter is the correct solution.

A portable jump starter with a 12V accessory outlet can also run the pump. It avoids having to reach a wall outlet and can be useful for emergencies, though you still need to confirm that its outlet can supply enough current for the inflator.

Check the pump or its documentation for both voltage and amperage. A suitable adapter should provide 12V DC, use the correct polarity, and have an equal or higher amperage rating than the inflator. Search terms like “12V DC power supply with cigarette lighter socket” should bring up the right type of device.
