What Affordable AM4 CPU Should I Upgrade to from an i7 8700?

I'm looking to upgrade my current rig, which has an i7 8700 and a RTX 3060 Ti, 32GB of DDR4 RAM running at 3600MHz, and an Asus Z390P motherboard. I want to switch to an AM4 CPU that is better than the i7 8700 without breaking the bank. Additionally, I'm planning to get a new motherboard along with the CPU. Any suggestions?

I've seen a lot of recommendations for the Ryzen 5800X, but be prepared that it's on the pricier side right now. If you want something faster in gaming and cheaper overall, the Intel 14600K should be at the top of your list.

You might want to consider the Ryzen 5 5600. It's a solid choice if you’re looking for something cheap that still outperforms the i7 8700. Depending on your needs, you might even find the 3600 model sufficient for gaming and general tasks.

Don’t go for the cheapest options like the Ryzen 5500 or 5700, as they don’t bring much improvement over the i7 8700. Aim for the 5600 or 5700X for a better upgrade. However, the Intel 14600K is a great all-around CPU too and works well with DDR4 RAM.

If you're up for it, the Intel 12600K paired with an MSI B760-P DDR4 motherboard could be a great option. This setup offers room for future upgrades too, like going to the 14th generation later on, making it a nice long-term investment.
