My PC started freezing and showing occasional blue screens about three months ago. Eventually it needed several power cycles before booting, then would run for roughly six hours before crashing again. Now it freezes immediately when loading any operating system, although it remains stable in the BIOS. Windows from the SSD and Linux from a USB drive both fail the same way.
I tested the RAM, swapped in another power supply and GPU, and rebuilt the system outside the case with a different AM4 motherboard. Since the behavior continued, the CPU appears to be the likely failure point. My Ryzen 9 5950X lasted around six years, but replacing the whole platform is difficult because DDR5 costs are currently too high.
The system has an RTX 3080 and 32 GB of DDR4. I mainly want a desktop for gaming, browsing, media, occasional video editing, streaming, development, and modding games. Should I replace the 5950X with another high-end AM4 chip, buy a gaming-focused X3D processor, or get a cheap temporary CPU until a platform upgrade makes more sense?

The 5900XT is another near-5950X option, though the regular 5900X may offer better value on the used market. For gaming, one of the X3D chips is generally the more interesting choice; for mixed productivity, a 5900X or similarly priced higher-core chip is easier to justify.
A 5500X3D would be worth checking if it is available at a reasonable local price. Otherwise, the 5700X is a sensible inexpensive replacement, while a used 5900X makes more sense if you genuinely need lots of cores for editing or other workloads. I would avoid paying a premium for a 5800X3D unless the price is unusually good.
If you only need something temporary for basic desktop use, even an inexpensive AM4 processor could bridge the gap. A phone connected through USB-C to HDMI might technically handle browsing and video, but it would not be a realistic substitute for this system, especially with gaming and development in the mix.
