I'm considering installing a few indoor cameras in my apartment mainly to check on my pets and preserve evidence in case of a break-in. I'd also like the option to view the cameras remotely when I'm away. At the same time, I'm uncomfortable with stories about hacked cameras, exposed live feeds, and companies storing or accessing private recordings. I understand that nothing is completely secure, but I'd prefer a setup where recordings are stored locally or offline, remote access is limited to me, and there's no mandatory monthly subscription. It should also be affordable and straightforward for someone who isn't very technical to install. I'm based in Europe and have looked at Reolink, while Ubiquiti seems appealing but currently too expensive. What brands or specific types of setup would you recommend?

The most privacy-friendly approach is a local NVR with cameras that save footage on-site, rather than a cloud-only system. Keep the recorder and cameras on your home network, use strong unique passwords and two-factor authentication, update the firmware, and avoid exposing the recorder directly to the internet. A managed all-in-one system can be easy to use and offer local storage, notifications, and remote access, but the initial hardware cost is higher. Reolink has relatively accessible cameras and NVR kits, and some models can record to an SD card or a local recorder. Before buying, check whether the exact model supports local recording, whether remote access can be disabled, and how security updates are handled. Avoid obscure bargain brands that require an unknown cloud service or use a default password.

Some consumer brands, including Eufy, offer cameras with local storage and no required subscription, but I’d still read the current privacy and security documentation carefully rather than assuming “local” means completely offline. Any camera that you can view remotely has some internet-facing component. For maximum isolation, record locally and only enable remote access when needed through a VPN.
