Reading other people's code is a major part of development, but I often struggle to understand how unfamiliar code works. What techniques, habits, or practice methods have helped you become better at following code and understanding the decisions behind it?

Sometimes difficult code really is difficult because it has poor names, missing documentation, or confusing structure. Don’t assume the problem is entirely your fault. Learn the language syntax, read the available documentation, and try to understand the overall purpose of the system before getting lost in individual lines. Clear code is a communication tool, so good naming and organization matter.
There isn’t really a shortcut—you improve by reading more code and researching whatever you don’t understand. Writing your own programs helps too, even small ones, because it makes common patterns easier to recognize. Debugging and learning to interpret compiler errors are also useful parts of that practice.
Start with small, understandable projects instead of trying to digest a huge codebase all at once. Pick one specific behavior and trace it from input to output, paying attention to why each design decision was made. Documentation, tests, and a debugger can show you what the code is intended to do and what values are actually doing at runtime.
Write down your thoughts while you read. Keep track of what each function seems to do, what data it receives, and where that data goes next. This reduces the amount you have to hold in your head. It also helps to make a small prediction about what changing one line would do, then test it locally to find gaps in your understanding.
