Used hardware is often the most reliable option for a home lab. An older desktop, mini PC, or second-hand server can run Proxmox, and you can create virtual machines for Kubernetes. It costs more upfront than free cloud resources, but you avoid regional capacity issues and get useful experience managing your own infrastructure.
For learning purposes, a hosted Kubernetes cluster can absolutely function as a home-lab environment, even if it isn’t physically at home. On the other hand, running your own hardware teaches different skills—storage, networking, virtualization, backups, and power management—so the best choice depends on what you want to practice.
