What are some fun projects for putting old DDR3 RAM to use?

I have some leftover DDR3 memory and want to use it for a hands-on electronics or computer-building project instead of simply recycling it. I don't currently have a compatible motherboard or CPU, and I'd like to keep the total project cost under about $100. What practical or creative projects would let me experiment with this hardware without spending much?

A budget-friendly route would be finding an older DDR3 desktop or server system locally, such as a refurbished business PC. That gives you a compatible platform for experimenting with Linux, virtual machines, backups, file sharing, or hosting a small service. Just check the total cost and condition first, since older servers can use noticeably more electricity than newer hardware.

The best project depends heavily on how much RAM you have and what kind it is. Before spending money, check the capacity per stick, speed, number of pins, and whether it’s standard desktop memory or server ECC/registered RAM. That information will narrow down which inexpensive used systems you can build around it.

You could turn a used DDR3 business desktop into a basic media server or home lab. Systems with fourth-generation Intel processors, like an i7-4790-class machine, are often compatible with DDR3 and can handle media streaming, storage, and several lightweight services. The amount and type of RAM you have will determine which systems are suitable, so check whether it’s desktop UDIMM or registered server memory before buying anything.

I only have the memory modules right now, so I’ll need to find a compatible motherboard and processor as part of the project.
