What are your best tips for organizing and storing tech cables?

As someone working in tech, I find myself with a huge collection of various cables ranging from HDMI to specialty connectors and dongles that I only use occasionally. I try to minimize the lower-quality cables but still end up with a significant number worth keeping. It's disheartening to see tech storage rooms filled with tangled cables. I'm curious if anyone has found effective storage solutions for their cables. For instance, while cable storage wallets look appealing, I'm not sure how many cables they actually accommodate, especially for thicker ones like HDMI or CAT6. I'd love to hear about any systems that have worked well for you!

I’ve got a small bin in my closet for cable organization. I use zip locks for each type: one for power cables, separate bags for each USB type, and so on. It saves me from creating a rat's nest, and I can just toss the correct bag to anyone who needs a cable.

My method involves using Ziplock bags with the length written on each one. Then, I categorize them by type. But let's be real, despite my efforts, I still end up with a big box of tangled mess! It's a constant battle between laziness and organization. 😂

I had a box full of outdated cables, and I'd occasionally need one. After clearing out some of the old ones, I realized I needed a fiber optic cable at one point but ended up not needing it after getting a new stereo. It's tough to keep up with the collection!

I sort my outdated cables into crates with Manila envelopes, which helps keep things organized.

I use plastic bins to organize my cables and have them stored in a basement. I even have a stash of component video cables just in case they make a comeback! I've got separate boxes for video, audio, speaker, USB, and other computer cables like FireWire and SATA.

For larger cables, I utilize Rubbermaid Roughneck 7-gallon tubs. They’re sturdy and keep everything in check!

I hang larger cables using shoe hangers - either the kind that goes inside the closet or over the door. It really helps free up space and keeps things neat. I’ve seen similar hanging solutions for smaller accessories, too!
